Southern Regional Jail Overview
Southern Regional Jail and Correctional Facility is a West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation regional jail in Beaver. Fayette County does not operate a separate adult county jail for ordinary detention. A person arrested by the Fayette County Sheriff's Department, a municipal police agency in Oak Hill or Fayetteville, WV State Police, or another local officer may be booked into this WVDCR facility after arrest or by court order.
The facility serves Fayette, Raleigh, Greenbrier, Wyoming, Summers, Mercer, and Monroe counties. WVDCR describes its jail population as pretrial felons, pretrial misdemeanants, sentenced felons, and sentenced misdemeanants from those counties. The same WVDCR annual report says Southern Regional Jail also contractually houses federal detainees for the U.S. Marshals Service, so physical location at the jail does not always mean the case is a Fayette County or state case.
The Fayette County regional jail information page points county arrestees and people held by court order to Southern Regional Jail. That local routing is important because older references to a Fayette County Jail can be confusing. The historic county jail in Fayetteville closed in 1994 and later became a museum, while modern adult jail custody for Fayette County routes through the state regional jail system.
The WVDCR facility page is the direct source for Southern Regional Jail address, phone, directions, superintendent, counties served, and visitation rules.
Use the official facility page for current contact and visit rules, then use the regional jail search systems for custody lookup.
Southern Regional Jail Capacity
The WVDCR FY2025 Annual Report lists Southern Regional Jail with a rated population of 468. Older West Virginia Blue Book material listed a design capacity of 362 and said the original design was for 300 inmates. Use the FY2025 rated population for current facility context, and treat the older figures as history rather than a present jail count.
WVDCR public pages did not publish a single live total population for Southern Regional Jail in the research record. The Daily Incarcerations tool reports admissions by date and institution, not the full count inside the jail. That means a same-day admissions number should not be read as the jail's total population or an overcrowding measure.
| Measure | Figure | Use on this facility page |
|---|---|---|
| Rated population | 468 | Current WVDCR FY2025 facility capacity context. |
| Older design capacity | 362, with original design for 300 | Historical context from older state Blue Book material. |
| Southern Regional Jail admissions on July 2, 2026 | 8 | Daily admissions snapshot, not a total population count. |
| Fayette County adult jail facilities in the map | 1 | Southern Regional Jail is the only mapped detention facility serving Fayette County jail custody. |
Southern Regional Jail Lookup
For current regional jail custody, start with the WV Regional Jail Offender Search. The search form requires at least the first three letters of the last name and allows an optional first name. WVDCR warns that the public data changes quickly and may not reflect the true current location, release date, or status at the moment searched.
For same-day booking checks, use WV Daily Incarcerations. That tool can be searched by county or by institution. On July 2, 2026, the Southern Regional Jail admissions page showed the inspection date, total admissions, admission time, last name, first name, middle name, birth date, gender, and a View Details link. The text view did not show charges, bond, housing unit, mugshot, arresting agency, court date, or release status on the summary.
- Open the WV Regional Jail Offender Search for a name-based current custody check.
- Enter at least three letters of the last name, then add the first name if the result list is broad.
- Confirm the facility line. Fayette County jail custody normally points to Southern Regional Jail unless the person was released, transferred, or moved to prison.
- Check Daily Incarcerations by Fayette County or by Southern Regional Jail when the booking may have happened today.
- If no result appears, use the WVDCR prison search, WV VINE, the jail phone line, court records, or a public-records request.
The Daily Incarcerations screenshot from the Southern Regional Jail daily admissions path shows how institution admissions are organized on the state system.
Daily admissions help with recent bookings, while the name search is the better first stop for current regional jail custody.
Southern Regional Jail Contact
Southern Regional Jail is operated by WVDCR, not by the Fayette County Sheriff. Use the jail for custody confirmation, facility visit scheduling, and facility-specific questions. Use the arresting agency for incident reports and the Fayette County magistrate or circuit clerk for filed court records.

Southern Regional Jail Visits
Southern Regional Jail visitation is non-contact and scheduled through the facility process. WVDCR says inmates must submit a visitation request using SRJ form 5-0029. Each inmate is permitted one visit per month, and each visit is one half-hour long. The visitor limit is one adult plus two minor children or two adults. Special visits for unusual circumstances go to the Chief Correctional Officer, and proof may be required.
WVDCR did not publish a day-by-day Southern Regional Jail visit schedule on the facility page in the research record. The table uses the official published rules and marks day/hour cells as not published rather than importing another jail's schedule. Visitors should call the scheduling line before making the trip.

|---|---|---|
| Scheduling method | Inmate submits SRJ form 5-0029. | Call (304) 256-6738 to confirm scheduling details. |

Southern Regional Jail Mail
WVDCR uses centralized mail scanning for jail correspondence. The WVDCR mail rules require the inmate's first and last name, OID number, and full facility name with no abbreviations. The mailing address is PO Box 336, Phoenix, MD 21131. The sender must include a full return address with complete first and last name, not initials.
Money deposits and communication use state-level vendors rather than a Fayette County cashier page. WVDCR offender banking lists ConnectNetwork deposit channels by phone, web, and app. WVDCR calling and video services identify GettingOut as the calling and video visit provider. Official WVDCR pages did not list current deposit fees or call rates in the research source, so check the provider before paying.
| Service | Provider or rule | Detail for Southern Regional Jail |

Southern Jail Custody Types
A Fayette County inmate search should match the custody type. Regional jail custody uses the WV Regional Jail Offender Search and Daily Incarcerations. A person sentenced into WVDCR prison custody is searched through the WVDCR prison and supervision locator, which covers active supervision, prison, and parole status only. A discharged person may not appear in that prison search.
Federal detainees at Southern Regional Jail are different from sentenced BOP inmates. The FY2025 WVDCR report says Southern Regional Jail houses federal detainees under U.S. Marshals Service contract. A federal pretrial defendant may be physically held at Southern Regional Jail while the federal court and USMS control the case. Once committed to the Bureau of Prisons, the person is searched through the BOP inmate locator rather than the West Virginia regional jail search.
Immigration custody uses the ICE Online Detainee Locator System, not the county jail roster. USAGov describes ICE lookup by A-number or by biographic data. No ICE detention facility or BOP prison was located in Fayette County, but a detainer or transfer can still affect release from regional jail custody.
| Custody type | Where to search | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Fayette County or regional jail custody | WV Regional Jail Offender Search and Daily Incarcerations | Use Southern Regional Jail as the likely facility for county jail custody. |
| Sentenced WVDCR prison or parole | WVDCR prison/supervision locator | Use OID or first three letters of first and last name. |
| Federal pretrial detainee | USMS Southern District of West Virginia | May be housed at Southern Regional Jail under contract but remain in federal custody. |
| Sentenced federal inmate | BOP inmate locator | BOP covers federal inmates from 1982 to present. |
| ICE detainee | ICE ODLS | Search by A-number or biographic data; it is not a mugshot portal. |
Southern Regional Jail Intake
Fayette County arrests may start with a sheriff's deputy, municipal police officer, state trooper, DNR officer, or other authorized officer. After local processing, the person may be transported to Southern Regional Jail because Fayette County uses the regional jail for adult detention after arrest or court order. Standard jail intake generally includes identity checks, property inventory, search, fingerprints, a booking photograph if taken by the facility, medical and mental-health screening, classification, and housing assignment.
The first court step is separate from jail intake. West Virginia criminal procedure requires an arrested person to be taken without unnecessary delay before a magistrate in the county where the arrest is made, and a complaint must be filed promptly when the arrest was without a warrant. Roster charges can differ from the later court case because prosecutors or courts may amend, reduce, dismiss, or add charges after booking.
- Booking
- Administrative intake after arrest, including identity and custody processing.
- Classification
- Jail assessment used to decide housing and supervision level.
- Detainer
- A hold or request from another agency that can affect release.
- Remand
- A court order returning or keeping a person in custody.
Southern Jail PREA Context
WVDCR posts a zero-tolerance PREA notice on its jail search pages and lists a central office number, (304) 558-2110, for alleged sexual abuse or harassment information. The WVDCR PREA page also archives Southern Regional Jail audit reports, including recent audit years listed in the research record. PREA is the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act, a set of standards for preventing, reporting, and responding to sexual abuse and harassment in confinement.
Southern Regional Jail has also been the subject of serious recent civil-rights prosecution. The U.S. Department of Justice reported sentencing and guilty pleas involving former Southern Regional Jail officers in connection with the March 1, 2022 death of Quantez Burks and alleged force against inmates. DOJ also announced Andrew Fleshman's sentence in July 2025. A March 30, 2026 U.S. Attorney release announced Michael Pack's guilty plea to conspiracy.
WVDCR's February 5, 2026 reform update says the division highlighted progress toward national standards under new leadership, citing recruiting, training, pay, benefits, and workplace culture. For families, those system updates do not replace direct custody checks. Confirm visits, mail rules, medical routing, grievances, and release status with the facility or the proper court before acting on a roster result.
Note: Confirm custody, visit approval, and current facility restrictions with Southern Regional Jail before traveling to Beaver.
